Acne and Teenagers   by Alex Swandlin

What causes acne and what is the best facial cleanser to use to clear up the issue? If you’ve experienced issues with skin problems, this is a question you’ve probably asked yourself many times. Understanding the underlying issues causing acne related issues can help one determine the best product to use.

The varied reasons for skin related issues can be understood with a little research. At the onset of puberty, acne issues in teenagers are often attributed to hormones. The angst a teenager feels during that adolescent period can also induce stress related acne issues. Food allergies are sometimes also the culprit of these regular skin breakouts.

If your teenager is experiencing issues with acne, the first suggestion I have is to make a trip to your local allergist and have your teen tested for food allergies. Food related breakouts are caused when undigested food particles enter the bloodstream and are unrecognized by the immune system. The body then attacks those particles treating them like pesky little bacterial invaders leading to inflammation of the skin.

If food related allergies are ruled out, your dermatologist will most likely determine the root cause to be hormone related. If you are reading this, then you most likely have a teenager and you know that hormones can cause a host of issues beyond just acne outbreaks. A personal care regime that utilizes a cleanser with benzoyl peroxide can help tame these outbreaks.

Stress related issues causing skin blemishes can also be addressed by ensuring that your teen takes a break from their hectic routines. Suggest they spend some down-time from their studies by enjoying their favorite hobby. Make sure you don’t overload your teen with extra-curricular activities. An overloaded schedule can increase the stress your teenager experiences.

Utilizing a skin care treatment system on a regular basis will help tame the outbreaks. Explain to your teenager that these aren’t miracle treatments. However, consistent use can dramatically decrease the severity of the breakouts.

There are a variety of products on the market targeted to teen acne issues. Don’t let the quantity of products overwhelm you. Your local drugstore will most likely carry a three part cleansing system that incorporates a medicated cleanser, a toner, and a moisturizing repair treatment. These have been shown to be effective in reducing acne problems.

Keep in mind that higher cost is not always indicative of the best facial cleanser. Neither is brand recognition. For stubborn acne, your dermatologist can also prescribe a cream with a higher concentration of medication. Whether you use a prescription or over the counter product, encourage your teen to utilize these products as directed. Then remind your teen that they will most likely grow out of these pesky acne outbreaks.
